MATCH REPORT: PENYBONT 1-0 COLWYN BAY
On a sunny September afternoon at the DragonBet Stadium, Bont welcomed Colwyn Bay in what proved to be a feisty JD Cymru Premier affair. The last time the two sides met, Bont ran out 5–0 winners, and the boys in blue were hoping to replicate that and add another three points to their impressive start to the league campaign.
From kick-off, Bont immediately pressed forward. Merely seconds into the game, a lethal and acrobatic effort from Gabe Kircough flashed narrowly wide. Bont continued to dominate, and a low-driven strike from Kane Owen found its way through the Colwyn Bay defence, only to be collected by the goalkeeper. Minutes later, Owen was involved again, linking up cleverly with Nathan Wood to deliver a promising cross into the penalty area, winning Bont a corner.
In the 28th minute, Archie Matthews denied a Colwyn effort with a sharp block to keep the game level. Shortly after, at the other end of the field, Jac Clay opened the scoring for Bont with a close-range effort after a scuffle in the box. Two minutes were added to the first half, and Bont went into the break with a one-goal advantage.
Despite a solid first half from Matthews, he was replaced at half-time by Luke Armstrong after sustaining an arm injury. As the second half got underway, the tension continued to rise. Following a Colwyn Bay foul on Jac Clay, the young Welshman was forced off injured and replaced by Billy Borge. Ash Baker soon came on for Ioan Phillips, before a flurry of yellow cards saw Chris Venables and Baker both go into the book. Late on, Jaxon Humphreys replaced James Crole at the start of four minutes of added time, making his senior debut for Bont. The substitutes and the rest of the side saw out the closing stages as the full-time whistle confirmed victory, leaving Bont in second place.
Next up, Penybont travel to Briton Ferry Llansawel for a South Wales away day as the boys look to continue their push towards the top of the table.
